In this collaborative research effort with the Brain, Cognition & Development Lab at UF, directed by Dr. Lisa Scott, we examine the predictive value of early visual function on subsequent cognitive development. The development of visual and cognitive ability results from interactions between neural maturation and visual experience that result in foundational supports for later cognitive abilities. Early and accurate detection of visuocortical function impairments requires the use of multiple reliable measures and advanced data reduction and analysis techniques that are currently not available. In this project, we develop an index of healthy visual development in infants. In the future, we hope to use this index to address clinical and educational research questions, including assessing Cognitive visual impairment—more commonly known as Cortical or Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI).
